You will come across a lot of camera movements in films an TV productions that wou will not be able to achieve with what I have covered so far and these things tend to really spice up a film and make it look less low-budget if used well. How to get that without spending an arm and a leg?
Dolly
There are solutions out there, which are not superexpensive but this is often easy to improvise by things like:
- Putting the camera person in a wheelchair (see the Rodriguez book in resources)
- Having the camera person stand on a skateboard or something similar or sit on a bicycle with a shoulder rig while being pushed
- Putting the camera in a small car like a Smart or Mini and push it
- …
You often do not need a “real” dolly with rails to achieve what you’re looking for.
Crane
Again, there are affordable solutions (around 400$) out there and this is harder to improvise. It is doable as DIY but maybe this is something you should first try with rented equipment or try to live without for your first few films if DIY is not your thing.
Sliders
Sliders are great because they don’t have to be large to make a difference and thus are easy to carry with you but they are IMHO expensive for what they do, which is why I built a DIY one out of industry parts I got at ebay.
You can improvise the look by using anything with wheels that you can put the camera on. However it has its limitations as such a solution will probably very sensitive to vibrations and you can easily ruin a shot but before spending 300-1000$ on a slider I would give it a try.
